Light
Making of Form & Order
This proposed project for a non-denominational chapel at Farmingdale State College is driven by the goal of creating a profoundly spiritual space that welcomes people of all faiths for worship and reflection on life's events. The key concept to achieving this vision is the creative use of light. Recognizing the significant role light plays in fostering a spiritual atmosphere, the design focuses on innovative methods to control the entrance of light into the space.
Background Research
I based my research on First Unitarian Church of Rochester and designed by Louis Kahn and completed in 1962.
In the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, he integrated a distinctive clerestory window system that enabled gentle, diffused light to brighten the interior, establishing a tranquil and reflective ambiance. This thoughtful engagement with natural light is a defining feature of Kahn's architectural philosophy.
From the inside you can see the techniques that Louis Kahn used which wasn't as interesting as other designs but as we focus into the structure we can see the impact of the windows that are controlling the light inside the building.

DESIGN PROCESS
The Light Canon was influenced by Le Corbusier. Which I incorporated into my chapel and then added a reflector underneath.
The use of the slight 3 openings on my exterior roof chapel. This is also inspired by Le Corbusier method of making light enter at a angle which brings more light into the chapel without it being to much.
